Festivals, Special Events And Fun In The City
Rain or shine, Tokyo will be on its feet this weekend with plenty of traditional, international and unique festivals happening for everyone in the family to enjoy! Join the Sanno Matsuri for a glimpse of ancient Japan, the Mottainai Festa flea market and workshop for a boost of eco-consciousness, Candle Night Live for a relaxing evening away from the city's hustle and bustle and a ninja party where you can unleash of your spy skills. Not falling on the weekend precisely, but a special free event (with food!) promoting Tottori tourism is also on the agenda. Have a wonderful weekend!
An Ancient Parade
Sanno Matsuri
One of the three largest festivals taking place in the capital, the Sanno Matsuri is a mass street parade in the heart of Tokyo featuring 300 people dressed in ancient costumes. The procession begins at Hiei-jinja Shrine at 8 a.m. and returns to the shrine late in the evening after passing through many major spots in the city, including Tokyo station, Ginza and the Diet. During the festival you can also enjoy Ikebana (flower arrangement) displays and special Japanese tea tasting stalls in the shrine garden.

Get In a Spy Mood
Ninja Party in Odaiba
If you have kids who love playing spies, don't miss out on this event! 'Nin-Pa' is a fun gathering for adults and children alike, where participants will compete in a race dressed as ninjas, while challenging spiderweb walking, water balloon dodgin and other obstacles along the way to the finish line. The event also offers several exciting shows, a catering area and ninja training zones for the kids, and will culminate with an exclusive top DJs and special guest celebrity performers. You’ll be a ninja getting into risky water activities, so please wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet or dirty.

Turn off The Lights
Candle Night Live
Now in its 13th year, Candle Night began in 2003 with the slogan “Turn off the lights, take it slow” as part of a movement to inspire people to turn off all lights for a two-hour period and enjoy a simple evening. The event features live music, talks and great food prepared in an area where visitors can enjoy the light of candles. This year’s event features a rare piano and African drum collaboration that will surely help alleviate any pressures you may have been feeling over the past few weeks, days or months! Perfect for a visit with friends, a romantic outing or even solo!

Mottainai Festa 2016
One of the largest annual events in-line with Japan's campaign to encourage environmental conservation and sustainable use of resources through a variety of means, the Mottainai Festa features a variety of fun events and booths spreading the importance of the 4Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle, respect. There will be a flea market, handcraft workshops, toy booths for the kids, learning activities, a farmers market and many more.

Plunge Into the Sand Dunes
Special Event: Travel Tottori Evening with GaijinPot
GPlus Media, the operator of GaijinPot, Savvy Tokyo and Japan Today, is hosting a special evening to promote travel in Tottori. If you’re interested in learning about all of the cool things there are to do in the sand dunes of Tottori, as well as sampling some regional food and drink, grab a friend or two and join us.
