Monki, Harajuku
Swedish fast-fashion company H&M may be better known for its namesake brand, but now one of its other labels has entered the Tokyo shopping scene. Monki, a casual brand with a Scandinavian streetwear vibe to it, opens today in Harajuku.
Monki is located in Cute Cube, a new building right in the thick of Takeshita-dori. Other tenants include Sanrio, Candy A Go-Go and Spinns, all of which fit right in amongst the street’s funky, youthful atmosphere.
The Monki store is playful and fun, with carousel-like displays, shiny silver streamers and colorful accents to decorate it. The clothes are priced on par with H&M, but have a younger look, with lots of loud patterns and cute prints. There is also a small selection of merchandise produced exclusively for the opening of the Tokyo store.
Monki may be a Scandinavian brand at heart, but with its kawaii (cute) cartoon character mascots and bright colors, it’s almost as if it were destined for Harajuku.
