Summer Music Festival Style

Big Beach Festival has come and gone, but Fuji Rock, Summer Sonic and a host of other outdoor music festivals are just around the corner. Here are Savvy’s tips for looking great and staying comfortable while rocking out to your favorite bands.

1. A lightweight cotton, sleeveless top is perfect for staying cool, and the red and blue check pattern of this one by Volcom (¥7,350, available from Zozotown) was practically made for the outdoors. We love how the gradated coloring gives it a modern edge—leave the bottom button undone and tie it in the front for a cool-girl-next-door vibe.

2. Kate Moss made rubber boots cool when she was spotted wearing Wellies at Glastonbury. These bright pink Aigle (¥13,440) ones have a shorter length that’s a better match for Japan’s heat and humidity, without losing any of the rain and mud-repelling properties for which they’re known.

3. A brimmed hat is a must in order to avoid nasty sunburns while spending hours outdoors. Try a striped one for both style and function—the natural fibers mean it breathes easily (¥3,990, available from Magaseek).

4. Don’t risk ruining one of your best leather bags with mud and beer stains. Instead, try this adorable Candy bag by Furla (¥42,000, available from Zozotown). The large size and zippered top ensure that all of your essentials will be secure, but the translucent vinyl construction saves you from digging around to find your lip gloss.

5. Denim cutoffs have been regulars on the music festival circuit for years, but these ones by Zara (¥8,990) up the ante with multicolored zigzag embroidery and beading.

6. Leave your tortoiseshell shades at home and instead go with a brightly colored pair. These oversized Ray-Ban frames (about ¥12,000, available from optical stores across the city) are made of transparent rubber, so they’re just as durable as they are stylish.

7. Be ready to cop a squat wherever you see a patch of open sand or grass by carrying your own personal leisure mat. Beams makes brightly colored ones from lightweight plastic (¥5,040, available from Zozotown). They roll up small and hose down easily when you’re finished.

8. The unfortunate thing about outdoor festivals is that you never know what the weather will be like.
