Staying on trend in the fashion world doesn’t mean a new wardrobe every season. Smart accessorizing is a great way to remain “en vogue” without investing in experimental styles. These top summer accessory trends will be the fine details that bring last year's looks up to speed.

shades

Cool Shades

Oversized sunglasses have been at the fashion forefront for the past two seasons, and by popular demand, they are back for summer. A magical pair of sunglasses, making gym clothes look glamorous, the oversized frame is universally flattering and the added UV protection is an extra bonus. Pair these Diane von Furstenberg black tortoise sunnies ($126, or about ¥15,585) with a bright lipstick, and you’ll have no need for additional morning primping.

For added edge, mirrored aviators are the ticket for a touch of coolness to a casual outfit. This season, these mirrored sunglasses are the super heros that add color and brightness to any look with their reflective lenses. Opt for a blue hue, like these Ray-Ban metal aviators ($217.28, or about ¥26,876), to pair with all the rain resistant attire you’ll need this wet season.

The Little Things

The pendant necklace is at the top of the tier in jewelry this season. From large gold medallions to dainty stones, these diverse statement pieces can enhance an understated look, or act as the focal point of your whole outfit. This Maison Margiela gold and stone pendant (now on sale for ¥32,421) is a fun adornment that can be worn casually with a t-shirt or used for extra dazzle in an evening look.

Fashion over function is the intention with the itty-bitty belt trend. The thin, twine like accessory can be used to bring shape to an oversized shirt, or can be fastened around a summer knit for extra flair. Style this thin Alexander McQueen belt ($270, or about ¥33,400) around a loose oxford top for a more feminine silhouette.

shoes

Warrior Footwear

The gladiator sandal is another trend that has been carrying over from season to season, and it’s still going strong. Different variations of the lace-up, Greek-inspired sandal are floating around for summer, from knee-high statement shoes to more subtle ones with floss-thin straps. There is a gladiator sandal suitable for every style personality, from the simple to the extreme.

These bold black gladiators ($443, or about ¥54,750) or these subtler beige ones ($326, or about ¥40,325), both by Ancient Greek Sandals, can be paired with distressed denim shorts or a white shirtdress for a comfortable and cool summer look.

bags

It’s In the Bag

Cross-body, bucket and top handle bags are still the go-to styles in the handbag universe, but added floral motifs wrapping today’s “it” bags are what’s happening for summer. This floral crocheted tote by Sophie Anderson ($665 or about ¥82,255) is a perfect balance of function and style this season.

If the summer heat and humidity are keeping your oversized bags tucked in the closet, opt for a baby-sized version of one of your favorites. Lightweight miniature bags, such as this cutout leather bucket bag from Zara (¥10,990), are great alternatives during the dog days of summer.
