Health & Beauty
This fully organic veteran salon in the heart of Tokyo is as comfortable as your own home.
A favorite locale among the foreign community and Japanese women alike, Elana Jade, an organic beauty salon in Minato’s stylish Azabu Juban area, has operated under one simple principle ever since its opening back in 2009: “If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on your face.” Thanks to its strict healthy policies, lovely staff and a great variety of treatments, nearly a decade later it has grown to become one of the best-known venues for all sorts of beauty treatments, from facials to massage to eyelash extensions and manicures. Happy (and proud, too!) to celebrate its 10th anniversary next year, the Savvy Team returns to the salon to rediscover its charms and check what’s new on the horizon.
Years of experience and knowledge
With over 16 years of experience as a beauty therapist and a personal trainer, Elana (Jade) Gilbert, the charismatic founder of the salon, knows that what’s inside is as important as what’s outside. Ever since she began studying fitness, beauty therapy and nutrition in her home of Australia, she has advocated a holistic, organic approach to beauty, something she used as a base of her therapy approach at Elana Jade. When she opened the salon, she wanted to provide high-end beauty treatments that are effective, healthy and natural, and such that they have the power to help the skin restore its vitality and radiance, which as a result would improve people’s health and confidence. Ten years into the business, this policy hasn’t changed.
“Placing a dangerous substance on the skin can be akin to drinking it. It’s best to avoid chemical-laden products and instead use the best nature has to offer,” Elana advocates. That’s why the salon’s entire list of services uses organic product lines, all delivered by internationally trained and experienced therapists.
Elana’s charisma, however, also extends to communicating essential things with customers that go beyond the services offered at the salon: like things we need to do (and can do) on our own. “Eat, Sleep and Exercise” are the three pillars of holistic beauty care, she tells us, assuring us that any treatment can extend its effects if those are done properly.
Eating healthily involves consuming a lot of food rich in antioxidants — like açai berry, fresh organic fruits and vegetables, consuming lots of omega 3, vitamin C, and vitamin E to restore the skin’s collagen, and having a profound hydrating regime (of at least eight glasses of good quality water a day). Exercising is essential for our facial muscles too, she tells us, to prevent premature aging, sagging and loss of elasticity. Getting our beauty sleep means going to bed in the golden hours of 10:30 p.m. and 2 a.m., as the skin can only function at its optimal level if the other systems have slowed (when you’re asleep), at which point it can then repair the damage that has been created throughout the day.
This and much more is what we learn from Elana and her staff, a group of fully bilingual professionals who also happen to be kind and understanding of any of our problems (and won’t lie to you that waxing doesn’t hurt, but will work hard to make the pain last shorter.)
A variety of treatments and specials
As we keep returning to the salon ourselves, we figure that one of its greatest selling points is that, in an era of constantly changing menus, places and people, in a very positive way, not much has changed at Elana since its opening. Customers know exactly what they’re getting here and they know that the quality will always be up to their highest expectations.
The menu list is long and features all regular treatments, each with several subcategories. There’s waxing and there’s Brazilian waxing, then bikini waxing, arms, underarms, neck, chest (oh!) and more waxing. Nail treatments cover manicure and pedicure, extensions, designs and french nails. Facial treatments are customized to your needs, going from regular peeling to simple organic packages and anti-aging masks. You can also get eyelash extensions, eyelash and eyebrow tinting, spray tanning and a long list of different types of massages, including hot stone, aromatherapy and even prenatal.
The salon also offers a variety of packages, such as shellac manicure and pedicure (¥12,000), a pack of five hour-long aromatherapy oil massages (¥42,500), the full-course essential beauty package of a shellac manicure and pedicure with 120 sable eyelash extension (¥20,000), a kids pamper package (¥8,000 for a choice of two treatment), or the most popular package: “Relax and Escape,” a 90-minute-long hot stone massage and an hour-long conditioning facial (¥23,000).
Elana Jade further sends regular promotions and discounts to its dedicated newsletter subscribers, typically every season or before any major event in the year (think Valentine’s, Christmas and post-New Year indulgence care).
The salon’s tranquil ambiance is heightened by warm lighting, with the aroma of fresh organic herbs and oils to tantalize the senses. Generously sized, enclosed treatment rooms provide a private and relaxing haven where guests come to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
It’s a comfortable and reliable place to get the treatment you need and the healthy living advice you want.
